In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo claimed his maiden Ballon d'Or, surpassing Lionel Messi's 2012 trophy in the voting process. Furthermore, the captain of the five-time European champions secured the third place with the Ballon d'Or he earned while playing for Real Madrid in 2017. Ronaldo and Messi dominated the top 12 spots, with other notable nominees including Di Stefano, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Kevin Keegan, Rummenigge, Platini, and Van Basten.
